The results I’ve been noticing are INSANE that I just knew I had to let you guys in on the secret. Let’s jump into how to Get Rid of Oily Hair!

How to Get Rid of Oily Hair: Background
I personally hate when my hair gets oily. I know it’s a good thing for my overall hair health when there’s extra oils (or something like that?), but I truly DESPISE when my hair is greasy. Whenever my hair is greasy, even in the slightest bit, it literally throws my mood off and I don’t even feel confident whatsoever. Crazy how something as simple as hair can have such an effect on me, but I’m hoping I’m not the only one.
Thus, to deal with my greasy hair, I did what anyone would do with the same issue. Wash it! It came to a point where I was literally washing my hair every other day, and sometimes I didn’t even leave that day space in between. I noticed that since I washing my hair so often, it ended up being dry and not as silky as it always was. It lacked shine, volume, and basically even looked sort of lifeless. After some research, I actually found that washing your hair does in fact dry your hair out! When you wash your hair less often, it helps to preserve the natural oils that are produced in your scalp and it keeps your hair moisturized. So, when you wash it, it strips away your natural oils.

So, I decided to try out other things to keep my hair feeling clean without actually washing it. I tried out NUMEROUS different types of dry shampoos. Which, some were great but some just left my hair feeling chalky and gross. I tried to be a trooper and not wash my hair (only with water on some days), but it was honestly so tough. Until one day, I was getting a hair cut and my hairdresser gave me a tip which was just the be-all end-all answer to all of my questions and concerns.
How to Get Rid of Oily Hair: Use This!
The answer is simple and it all starts with … Conditioner! If I told you that my favorite thing about washing my hair isn’t conditioner, I’d be lying. I love how silky smooth conditioner makes my hair feel and just how soft it feels. I’m for sure guilty of over using it. So, that would lead to me using conditioner all over my hair; including my scalp and ends.
What is Conditioner Used For?
To break it down, conditioner is basically like moisturizer, but instead of being used on your face, it’s used for your hair (read about my skincare here!). Conditioner helps restore moisture to your scalp and ends and basically adds oils as well (hence, the soft feeling!). Thus, conditioner doesn’t need to be used super often, in excess, nor, does it need to be used directly on your roots because that’s where all of the oils are produced! Conditioner does in fact make your hair really shiny and soft, but, it makes your hair get oilier much quicker. When I found this out, it totally led to some major trust issues. I mean, how could a step in my hair hair care routine that I love SO much, betray me like that?! (I’m kidding but also.. not really).
How to Use Conditioner the Right Way!
Now going back to my hairdresser’s advice on how to get rid of oily hair! She told me that to preserve my hair health and to also extend time in between my washes, don’t apply conditioner to your roots! Now for my technique: I wash my hair with shampoo (scalp, roots, ends, the whole shabang). Then, I rinse and follow with conditioner. However, I only apply the conditioner from my mid-hair to the ends. I focus some extra attention on my ends to smooth them out and on the rest of my hair to keep it nice and shiny as well as smooth. By doing this, you are hydrating your hair in areas where it’s most necessary and avoiding the roots from getting weighed down.
A quick note, although it seems like I’m kind of bashing on conditioner, I’m definitely not! Conditioner adds nutrients and shine to your hair and once again, it makes your hair super smooth as well. So, it’s still VERY loved and very needed; however, this post is just a secret to update the way you’ve been using it!
How to Get Rid of Oily Hair: Conditioner Final Thoughts
If you are trying to extend time between washes, and don’t want your hair to feel greasy, use this technique! Wash your hair with shampoo as you normally do, however, change it up when you use your conditioner. When it comes to the conditioner, apply it from your mid-hair length to your ends (avoiding your roots!) Ever since I started to use this technique, I’ve been able to wash my hair only twice a week!! For me, that is just completely SHOCKING and such an improvement! As I mentioned in the beginning, I would literally wash it every other day and sometimes even every day, but now, twice a week is good. I can’t even believe that’s my reality now! This technique has led my hair to be clean, not greasy, healthy, and just overall much better! I HIGHLY recommend trying this technique next time you’re washing your hair.
