Hi guys and welcome back to Angie’s “Simply Beauty Blog!” In this post, I’ll be giving you the run down of a popular makeup subscription box; the Play! by Sephora box. Last year for my birthday, Daniel surprised me with a 6 month subscription for the Sephora monthly makeup box. When I first saw the gift, I was honestly blown away because not only do I absolutely ADORE makeup, I loved how it was a gift that would keep giving for an additional 6 months; even after my special day was over!
What’s a Makeup Subscription Box?
As usual, let’s start out with the basics first. What’s a makeup subscription box? Basically it’s a subscription service that allows you to try a bunch of different makeup products, all while not leaving the comfort of your own home. Depending on which subscription plan you sign up for, you can either receive full sized products, trial/mini size products, or a mixture of both! Some of the most popular beauty subscription boxes include Ipsy ($10/month), Boxycharm ($21/month), Allure Beauty Box ($15/month), Play! by Sephora ($10/ box), and Birchbox ($10/month).
Play! by Sephora: Makeup Subscription Box Review
And now, for the Play! by Sephora box thoughts! We all know and love Sephora as the makeup haven for us makeup lovers. They sell almost all of the luxurious brands, and let’s be honest, some of their prices are just out of this world crazy (*ahem* Natasha Denona eyeshadow palette for a low $129). A few years ago, Sephora finally decided to dive into the world of subscription boxes and launched their own for $10.00 a month.
Each monthly box includes 5 trial sized items. These items range from makeup to skin care to hair care. Each box also includes a bonus item, so you’re technically getting 6 products a month. Additionally, each box also includes a Play! pass that’s worth 50 bonus Beauty Insider points that can be used to get additional samples. The box includes a makeup bag which is always super cute and they also include a little booklet that has tips and information about each sample in the box.
When you sign up for the subscription plan, you take a beauty quiz which basically let’s them see your personal preferences and needs. You answer questions about your skin type, makeup preferences, etc. Thus, each month the products are sort of catered to your needs which is a huge bonus for me. Although the boxes say they include certain products, they can vary slightly. I HIGHLY recommend this box for anyone looking to sign up for a beauty subscription box. This box includes high end brands and always offers a great variety, making it so exciting to open up the box each month! Also, I love how it comes monthly so it feels like a little surprise (even though you paid for it).
Play! by Sephora: Makeup Subscription Box Final Thoughts
Final thoughts: If you’re a big makeup fan and want to try new products without breaking the bank, I highly recommend trying out a monthly subscription beauty box! Out of all of the boxes mentioned, I definitely recommend the Play! by Sephora box because they offer high end brands and just a huge variety of products. As you can tell from the past boxes above, they include brands such as Ouai, Benefit, Nars, Smashbox, Urban Decay, and much more!
Although the products are mini sized, you can still get a lot of use out of them and also, it’s just a fun way to try a bunch of different things! I’ll admit, some boxes may be total and complete flops when you receive them, but that’s normal and will only make you more excited for what’s to come! Like I said maybe fifty times already (what’s one more?), I HIGHLY recommend this service and I hope you guys like it as much as I do! <3
Play! by Sephora: Makeup Subscription Box Alternatives
Out of the mentioned boxes, I only tried the Sephora one (hence the title of this article), but, I’ve watched tons of reviews about a bunch of the other plans and I definitely have some thoughts!
Allure Beauty Makeup Subscription Box:
Out of the boxes mentioned, the Allure Beauty box often has collabs with other beauty influencers and notable names in the makeup industry. For instance, they collaborated with beauty influencer Carli Bybel and the box included some of her favorites. The products included a Natasha Denona single shadow, and a Briogeo Hair Product. Allure also had a collab with Jaclyn Hill in the past where the box was also packed with her favorites. Out of the boxes mentioned, I would most likely get this one since Allure is such a notable brand, so their boxes always include big name brands and products I won’t purchase otherwise on my own.
Boxycharm Makeup Subscription Box:
Another beauty box that I’ve formed an opinion about is Boxycharm. This box retails for $21 and typically offers full size products and the box true value is sometimes even over $100! Although some of the past boxes looked amazing, I feel like this subscription service is pretty hit or miss. Sometimes when I watch the monthly Boxycharm unboxing’s on my favorite YouTube channels, I’m truly SHOOK at how bad the boxes are! It’s not that they’re bad products but they’re just not interesting and I’m so glad that I didn’t sign up for this service. On the other side, sometimes the boxes just look amazing and it makes me have major FOMO that I didn’t sign up for the service. Thus, this subscription service is labeled as the hit or miss one, in my opinion.
