About the Product:

The Maybelline Dream Urban Cover foundation was launched about a few months ago; just in time for the summer months as it contains SPF 50. The product comes in a squeezable tube in the standard foundation amount; 1.0 fl oz / 30 mL. It is available in most drugstores including Target as well as Ulta and it retails for $12.99! The foundation is available in 16 total shades and I purchased mine in the shade 112 Natural Ivory.

Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Foundation Claims:

This foundation claims to provide “flawless coverage” hence the name (“full coverage protective makeup”) with a breathable and lightweight finish. Now, let’s address the elephant in the room. Why is it called Protective Makeup and not just foundation? The foundation claims to be protective because it contains SPF 50 and is also said to be enriched with antioxidants to help protect your skin from pollution and natural aggressors. When I first heard about this product, I was immediately SOLD! Flawless finish all while keeping my skin safe? I’m in! One small disclaimer, this product doesn’t out right state which type of skin type it was formulated for, which made me a little tiny bit skeptical when purchasing it.

My Experience with Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Foundation:

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, my skin type is oily. Although it’s oily, I’ve definitely been noticing lately that the oiliness has been lessening which makes me so beyond happy! Nonetheless, I still gravitate toward mattifying products (primers and foundations) since they will help to control my oiliness throughout the day. When I first heard about this foundation, I was very intrigued because I LOVE foundations that look natural, provide some coverage, and also provide skincare benefits. I didn’t really see what exact skin type this was intended for, but, I still decided to give it a shot.

So, let me start off with the good points. It’s usually super difficult for me to find my exact foundation match. Most shades tend to pull too warm (a.k.a ORANGE), or just totally off and I feel as though I look like a complete clown. But, the shade 112 Natural Ivory is close to PERFECTION and it looks like a second layer of skin; which is just amazing. Another plus of this product is the packaging! I love that it’s in a tube because it’s very easy to dispense the product and you also don’t have to worry about damaging the tube or the tube breaking.

Now, let’s move on to the not so amazing parts of this foundation. First off, this product claims to be “full coverage” and let me be the first to tell you that it 100% is NOT! 1 layer of this product provides almost no coverage at all and you can still see almost all of your skin peeking through. I honestly have my moments where I love a natural finish. For instance, if I have to get ready super quickly to go on some errands, I prefer a more natural look. However, I’m a little torn with this product because I purchased it hoping that it would be more full coverage but it definitely isn’t. It doesn’t look bad on the skin, but, it doesn’t deliver on the product’s promises.

“It doesn’t look bad on the skin, but, it doesn’t deliver on the product’s promises.”

The next topic I want to touch base on is my skin type. As I stated a few moments ago, I have oily skin, thus, I can’t really wear products that have a glowy finish because I will look like a straight up grease ball at the end of a long day. This product is 100% NOT for my skin type. The first time I wore it, I tried it out with one of my favorite primers; the Too faced Primed & Peachy cooling matte primer. Honestly… shocked is an understatement of my reaction when I looked at my face after a few hours. I was so oily and beyond shiny, I couldn’t believe it! However, if you have dry skin, run, do not walk to pick up this product because it will work perfectly with your skin type to add hydration and dewiness.

After that initial disaster, I was a little terrified to wear the foundation again so I put it in my drawer and took a small break from it. A few weeks later, I felt ready to try it again but that time, I applied a super duper mattifying primer hoping it would help avoid the same thing from happening again. After wearing the foundation for the entire day, I was pleasantly surprised that my skin didn’t look super oily; it just looked natural and not too greasy whatsoever. Thus, the only way I can wear this foundation for an entire day without worry is applying a very mattifying primer underneath as well as setting powder on top to really lock it in place.

“I was a little terrified to wear the foundation again…”

As far as the protective powers this product claims to have, I can’t really say if it works or not but, it definitely makes me feel better knowing I have an extra layer of protection on my skin!

Lastly, let’s discuss the price. The standard size (the only size) of this product is 1 fl oz. and it retails for $12.99. If you have dry skin and are looking for a lightweight protective foundation, then I 100% think that the price is fair. However, if you have oily skin or if you are shopping around for a full coverage foundation; I don’t think the product has much value, despite it’s low price point. If you have oily skin, you will most likely need to apply a lot of a mattifying primer (extra $$). Additionally, if you are looking for a full coverage finish, you will need to apply a LOT of product in order to build it up to where you want it to be (extra $$) as well.

What do others say?

On Ulta.com, this product has 3.6 stars out of 5 and 61 reviews. Most of the reviews that gave this product a high rating claim that they love how the finish is super natural and the product feels lightweight. When looking at the negative reviews, I noticed how the majority of them stated how they wish the product had a more full coverage (like it claimed) and some said how this product seems as though it’s intended for a dry skin type because of it’s dewy finish.

Verdict –> 2/5 ‘Hearts <3’

Although this foundation shade is absolutely perfect for me (finally!), I feel like the formula is just way way way too dewy for my oily skin type. Although a matte primer makes the foundation last longer and be more wearable, I don’t feel like it is a top contender among the foundation’s that I currently have in my makeup collection. The good points for this product are the packaging and the application of it on a quick errand light makeup day! Lastly, even though I’ve said it before, I’ll say it one last time. If you have dry skin and are looking for a hydrating, glow-y, dewy foundation, I feel as though this one will be absolutely PERFECT for you! Additionally, if you are looking for a super light coverage foundation that applies in seconds, then this one is also one worth picking up!
