How Do I Fix My Cakey Makeup? Tips to Avoid Cakey Foundation!

Photo by Free Creative Stuff on Pexels.com

When I started to do my makeup, one thing that I began to notice was throughout the day, the makeup around my nose would begin to bunch up and just look so cakey. If you’re wondering what cakey means, it basically means that the makeup looks extra heavy as if it’s just sitting on top of your skin and bunching up instead of acting as a second layer of skin (not a cute look!). Thus, the name “Cakey Makeup” was born.

If you have any troubles with a cakey nose or cakey makeup in general, fear not! Down below, I showcase three steps on how I defeated this annoying issue; the examples apply specifically to my nose, however, the same principles and concepts can be applied anywhere on the face. Are you ready for my tips? Let’s get started!

Step 1: Before Applying Makeup, Exfoliate!

If there’s one tip that I feel really addressed the whole cakey-nose issue, I feel like it’s this one! Each time before I apply my makeup, I really like to exfoliate my nose. What does this do? Well, it’s a small step that can make a world of a difference. When you exfoliate your nose, you’re basically getting rid of any of the dead skin cells in that area and smoothing it out. I’ve found that when I exfoliate before I do my makeup, the products really just soak and absorb into my skin. This tip doesn’t just work with helping the makeup on your nose look better, but it really works for all of your face makeup in general!

With this tip, since I exfoliate my skin so often, it’s important to use an exfoliator that’s not too harsh on your skin so it doesn’t just strip your skin each time! My favorite exfoliator at the moment is the St. Ives Blackhead Clearing Green Tea Scrub. In my opinion, this exfoliator is very gentle on my skin so I can use it daily. Although it’s gentle, it still exfoliates my skin beautifully; this product just has the perfect balance of being gentle yet effective! It’s also pretty affordable and comes with a lot of products, where a little bit goes a long way!

Step 2: Before You Apply Your Base Makeup, Apply Primer!

It’s no secret that I am a huge believer in makeup primer! I love finding primers that work for my skin type and ones that also work to extend the longevity of my makeup throughout the day. So, since we’re applying primer to extend the wear of your makeup and keep it from slipping off, we can apply the same logic to pay attention and care to our nose!

I have pretty oily skin so I typically look for primers that are mattifying (but not too much!) so that they can help keep my oils at bay throughout the day. So, when I apply my primer, I make sure to apply some to my nose and also to the corners of my nose as well; which is where I typically get the most cakey-ness and bunching of the product. I’ve found that paying extra attention to my nose area and those pesky corners have made it much easier for makeup to really stay on there the entire day without slipping or looking like I have too much makeup on!

My favorite primer lately has been the Rimmel Stay Matte! I’ve been using it for months and I’ve been BEYOND happy with it. It helps my makeup last all day on my skin and it also really helps to keep my skin matte and shine-free throughout the entire day, even on my nose!

Step 3: When Applying Foundation To Your Nose, Apply Sparingly!

Now that we’ve prepped our face, it’s time to apply our makeup! So far, we’ve done the steps that are necessary to ensure that the makeup on our nose is going to be smooth throughout the day without any bunching. Now, we have to make sure we apply the makeup properly so that all of that work for our base isn’t put to waste!

When it comes to ensuring my foundation doesn’t cake up or look too heavy around my nose, I’ve found that what works best is to barely apply any product to it! Hear me out. When you’re applying foundation to your face, apply it everywhere (cheeks, forehead, etc.) and then use the remaining product that you have either on your sponge or on your brush to apply it to your nose. Although it may seem like you’re not really applying much to your nose, trust me, it’s enough! You’ll still get coverage on your nose, however, you won’t have too much product, hence, no cakey makeup! I started using this technique a few months ago and I’ve been so impressed with how different it makes my makeup look and settle on my nose; you’ll love this tip!

*Bonus Tip!*

In one of my previous posts, I gave a hack for oily skin that has been LIFE CHANGING for me! To give you an overview, after priming my skin, I apply a loose powder to my face to set the primer. This small trick really helps to keep my makeup on and budge-free all day! This tip also really works if you apply it to your nose after priming as well. Just exfoliate, prime, powder, and then apply your foundation. I know it may seem like a lot of work, but, if you want a cake-free nose all day, this will be your life saver!
