Is it Worth the Hype?! All about the BRAND NEW Elf Matte Putty Primer!

by Angie <3

If you’re a makeup lover like me, you’ve probably seen a brand new primer making its rounds on the internet and getting tons of hype. What’s that primer? It’s the Elf Matte Putty Primer! Last year, one of the most affordable makeup brands, E.l.f, launched a putty primer that turned the makeup community upside down. Tatcha, a luxurious skin care company, launched a primer called the Silk Canvas primer that quickly became a cult favorite. However, the price tag was a little too steep for the average makeup consumer ($52!). Thus, Elf worked their magic and launched a product that was meant to be a dupe for the adored Silk Canvas primer.

The Putty Primer by E.L.F:

The putty primer that Elf initially launched was the Poreless Putty Primer. This primer retailed for $8.00 and claimed to create smooth skin that’s prepped with Squalane to moisturize and grip makeup for all day wear. Additionally, this primer claimed to smooth any imperfections and create a poreless effect to the skin!

When I heard about the original primer, I ran to my nearest Target because I just knew I had to have it in my life. After using the primer for a few weeks, I found myself to really enjoy it! I noticed that it smoothed out my skin and created a great base for my foundation. I also found that it did in fact reduce the appearance of my big pores, which was a huge bonus for me. However, as I was using the product daily, I found a little issue that prevented me from falling head over heels in love with it.

What was that little issue? I found that this primer made my face way too oily throughout the day and I wasn’t really liking how my makeup looked after a few hours. Although the primer still reduced my pore appearance, my skin was getting very oily and shiny. A quick disclaimer, I have pretty oily skin as well as enlarged pores so when I’m looking for a primer I look for it to not only reduce my pore appearance but to also keep my oils at bay!
Although this primer wasn’t ideal for me because of my oily skin, I continued to use it because I really loved the effect it had on my pores.

BUT THEN! Elf made my heart stop when they announced that they’re expanding their Putty Primer Line at the end of 2019 / beginning of 2020. They announced that they’re adding a Matte Putty primer which is perfect for a shine-free matte complexion, and a Luminous Putty primer which is perfect for those who want a radiant, glowing complexion.

Obviously, you can guess which primer I was super excited for! (The Matte version for shine-free skin!)

I ran to my nearest Ulta, multiple Targets, all to find out that the primer was no where to be found. I quickly hopped on to Ulta.com, and the rest was history!

When you’ve been using makeup every single day religiously, when it comes to trying new products out, you just know if something is meant for you. After wearing this primer for a few days, I knew that I finally found THE ONE!

About the Elf Matte Putty Primer:

The Elf Matte Putty Primer is infused with Kaolin and White Charcoal to absorb excess oil for a shine-free finish. Additionally, this primer claims to glide over the skin for a poreless effect and the ultimate grip on makeup. This primer has the same packaging as the original poreless putty primer. It comes in a very thin acrylic jar with 0.74 oz of product. The only difference with the Matte primer is that it appears to be white while the original has a pink color.

How I use it:

Before applying my foundation, I apply a thin layer of this primer all over my skin. I allow it to dry down and absorb into the skin for about 20-30 seconds, and then I apply my foundation and get ready for a good makeup day minus any shine!

One thing to mention is that since this product comes in a small flat jar, there isn’t an applicator or a pump to apply it. This means that you have to apply it with your fingers! Some people may not like this, however, I feel like I enjoy it even more because it really lets me press the product into my skin while picking up just the right amount of product rather than it getting dispensed. Also, this will allow you to use every last bit of the product versus a pump, which doesn’t get 100% of the product out by the time the bottle is done.

My Experience With The Elf Matte Putty Primer:

This primer really works to keep your skin matte and it truly keeps your oils at bay all while smoothing out your pores! Honestly, the best of all of the worlds. I found that even 7 hours after applying my makeup, there was no shine peeking through whatsoever, which is absolutely SHOCKING for me. How can I say this primer works with such confidence? Usually, as part of my makeup routine, I like to set my makeup with a mattifying spray to really lock in my makeup for the day to ensure the oils don’t really peek through.

However, when I was giving this primer a shot, I didn’t use any setting spray to really test out it’s oil-controlling abilities and I was 100% impressed! My skin looked matte, shine-free, and all of my makeup was still locked in place; my blush, bronzer, and highlight.

I’m so glad Elf released this primer! I finally found a primer that targets all of the areas that I need it to: Oil control as well as pore appearance! If you have oily skin and are looking to get a primer, this is the one for you!!!

Have you ever tried this product or the original putty primer? If so, do you like it? If not, what are some of your favorite primers? I would love to hear from you! <3
